The week so far...

SUNDAY

There were two trips offered to the college staff this past weekend. One was to Santa Fe (Folk Art Festival), and the other was to Taos (Pow Wow). I decided to go to the Pow Wow. It was a lot of fun, and there was Italian Ice there! At the Pow Wow there were a lot of dances, and forming a square around the dancing area were venders. The venders were selling wooden flutes, skirts, pipes, pottery, fry bread, beads, jewelry, movies, and clothes. It was quite a big event.

MONDAY

Well, I have a little bit of a different assignment this week. Since there is no YSC group this week I am working in Youth Programming this week, with children between the ages of 3 and 7. There are 5 children in all. The first evening was orientation. During orientation I (& the other college staff person working with me) had the children for the first time alone. We played a name game, duck-duck-goose, visited the Ghost House, and then the kids were picked up by the parents (who had been participating in their own orientation).

TUESDAY

Our first full day with the kids we actually had seven kids. It was a lot of fun. We played games, and made prayer chairs. The kids also traced each other on large pieces of paper and drew representations of themselves within their outlines.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY

Both days are kind of blurred together. We went to the farm, library, and even had a storyteller tell the children the story of Rapunzel (the bros Grimm style). And on Thursday the kids made boats in the evening for pool night. Also, on Thursday I got my assignment for next week. I was given the opportunity to work in youth programming for another week, so I will be working with a pre-k child and 1st through 3rd graders.

FRIDAY

In the evening we had pool night. The kids sailed their boats in the kiddie pool and were just lashing around having fun.

SATURDAY

Today, we are working on a skit we will be performing tonight, based on 'the tem tiny tadpoles'.

Saturday NIGHT

Saturday Night Live

Well, it's Saturday, the final day of our work week here. What's so special about Saturday is that it is a break from the normal service in the morning, and is a day for the kids to unwind and have fun.

Last night our kids went to the waterfront for a campout, and this morning they will be taking canoes out onto the lake (Abiquiu Lake). It sounds like a nice way to end the week- right? And later tonight they will be participating in the weekly round up of all youth activities called 'Saturday Night Live' (in previous years this was called Saturday Celebration), SNL is a fun time, it includes energizers and skits performed by each age group in Youth Programming, as well as our YSC group. What is special about tonight is that our YSC group will be running SNL, and that tonight it will be held in the Agape Center.

Coffee House

Coffee House occurs every Thursday night, hosted by the college staff. It's very much like a talent show, with the college staff selling baked goods and beverages at Coffee House (the price is a small donation).

While getting ready for a new day.

Yesterday was a great day with the YSC. We have a group of seven youth this week, so it's a pretty relaxed week. In the morning we went to a nonprofit called 'Adobe in Action', which is currently in the starting phase. If anyone would like to know more about this organization please go to adobe inaction.org (rumor has it that our group from yesterday will be featured in an upcoming blog post).

The afternoon was off as usual-- I took a nap.

Then in the evening we walked the labyrinth, and played a game of volleyball.

Went "hiking" yesterday.

There is a hiking ban on national forest land because of the fires. So there is only one open hike at Ghost Ranch right now- Matrimonial Mesa.

Happy Independence Day!

Well, as most know, this is the week of the fourth of July. However, we work here at Ghost Ranch on the fourth of July. So, instead we celebrate Independence Day on the 2nd. So, yesterday we had a little celebration, pictures will be coming shortly.

Today was just a day to relax after a long week of work. This past week we brought our YSC group from Minneapolis to a nonprofit called Adobe in Action where they made adobe bricks in the morning, and boy was that a lot of work. We also had two days of service on the ranch. One of which we spent making adobe bricks, but with slightly different methods. On the ranch we all got a chance to walk around in mud, mixing the clay and water. We even had three girls decide to take mud baths and cover themselves completely in mud (which hardens rather fast in NM).

I wish I had time to write more at the moment, but I will try to update some more in the afternoons here, which this past week consisted of four hour long naps. Pictures are coming soon.
